Mr. China's Son

Mr. China's Son
£2.99

No other book so poignantly reveals the travails of the common person and village life under Chinas tempestuous government. He Liyis saga of poverty and hardship is told with humor and a surprising lack of bitterness. Yet his struggle to embrace citizenship speaks for an entire generation of men and women who survived Maos labor camps and the many failed experiments of the Communist revolution. He Liyi belongs to one of Chinas minorities, the Bai, and he lives in a remote area of northwestern Yunnan Province. In 1979 his wife sold her fattest pig to buy him a shortwave radio. He spent every spare moment listening to the BBC and VOA in order to improve the English he had learned at college between 1950 and 1953. For further practice, he decided to write down his life story in English. Humorous and unfiltered by translation, his autobiography is direct and personal, full of richly descriptive images and phrases from his native Bai language. At the time of He Liyis graduation, English was being vilified as the language of the imperialists, so the job he was assigned had nothing to do with his education.;In 1958 he was labeled a rightist and sent to a reeducation-through-labor farm. Spirited away by truck on the eve of his marriage, Mr. He spent years in the labor camp, where he schemed to garner favor from the authorities, who nevertheless shamed him publicly and told him that all his problems belong to contradictions between the people and the enemy. After his release in 1962, the talented Mr. He had no choice but to return to his native village as a peasant. His stratagems for survival, which included stealing nightsoil from public toilets and extracting peach-pit oil from thousands of peaches, personify the peasants universal struggle to endure those difficult years. He Liyis autobiography recounts nearly all the major ev ents of Chinas recent history, including the Japanese occupation, the Communist victory over the Nationalists in 1949, Maos disastrous Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, the experience of the labor camps, and changes brought about by Chinas dramatic re-opening to the world since Deng Xiaoping came to power in 1978.;No other book so poignantly reveals the travails of the common person and village life under Chinas tempestuous Communist government, which He Liyi ironically refers to as Mr. China. Yet he describes his saga of poverty and hardship with humor and a surprising lack of bitterness. And rarely has there been such an intimate, frank view of how a Chinese man thinks and feels about personal relationships, revealed in dialogue and letters to his two wives.

Ginger felt the blood drain from his face. The muscles seemed to go stiff. For a few seconds he could not speak. 'Was the name of the prisoner given?' he blurted. Sandgrain and Hourglass - Penelope Shuttle - Poetry Texts & Poetry Anthologies

Sandgrain and Hourglass - Penelope Shuttle - Poetry Texts & Poetry Anthologies
£7.16

A poem can remove the thorn from any lion's paw - but by the same token a poet may have to ask the lion to tend her wound. Penelope Shuttle's new collection, "Sandgrain and Hourglass", charts a variety of transactions between poet-self and wound, between wound and beast. A major preoccupation is her continuing experience of loss, particularly the way time modulates and redefines grief. Some aspects of human experience can be too painful or difficult to bear except through poetry. As Ted Hughes said, "poetry is a way of speaking to people we've lost when it is too late". In these poems - as in her previous book "Redgrove's Wife" - Shuttle continues such conversations with her husband Peter Redgrove, her father Jack Shuttle, and her close friend L.H.S., among others. Her engagement with the world's manifold possibilities is also strongly present in Sandgrain and Hourglass - A machine for grading kisses? Edward Thomas translated into Japanese? A stolen reindeer? Faust? Francis Bacon's mirror? Bedtime? The possibilities are endless.

Japanese for All Occasions - Taeko Kamiya - Language Learning: Self Study

Japanese for All Occasions - Taeko Kamiya - Language Learning: Self Study
£12.79

In Japanese, register - the way you change your words according to who you are speaking with - plays a key role. The rules of register in Japanese are far more complicated than they are in English, but until now there hasn't been a book that lays it all out in an accessible format. "Japanese for All Occasions" is a much-needed introduction to this bewildering aspect of the language. Through 57 dialogues, veteran teacher Taeko Kamiya shows learners how the Japanese change their way of speaking depending on the social setting or their relationship with the listener, with examples ranging from casual to super polite. Chapters are ordered according to function (Introducing People, Identifying Things, etc.) so that learners can absorb the most common sentence patterns used in daily life at the same time that they study casual, polite, and honorific styles. Each one presents three similar dialogues that show contrasting styles of speech. Detailed notes explain the grammar or usage at work in the dialogues, and quizzes at the end of each chapter allow learners to test their understanding. Best of all, the book comes with a free CD containing all the dialogues, narrated by professional Japanese actors. For intermediate students and above.

Under Foreign Eyes - James King - Film, TV & Radio

Under Foreign Eyes - James King - Film, TV & Radio
£12.79

This book is about the perception of Japan in the sixty films set there by gaijin (foreigners) - outsiders who almost always do not speak or read Japanese. My area of attention is directed to films depicting post World War II Japan and the Japanese, and, in many cases, films showing how foreigners in the same time frame respond to Japan. Why have a substantial number of films been set there by strangers? As a body of work, what do they tell us about contemporary Japan and about cinema? These films certainly provide a new cultural history of the West's reaction to Japan, but, even more, they are constructions that demonstrate how the West gazes at Japan. As such, more information can often be derived about the onlookers as on those looked-upon.
