In June 2010 Naoto Kan became prime minister of Japan, taking over Yukio Hatoyama. Mr Kan is the 5^th man to be the prime minister of Japan in four years. He was the deputy PM of previous Prime Minister Hatoyama. His government came into power in 2009 ending conservative Liberal Democratic Party decades of being in power. Hatoyama backtracked on his promises by not moving the US base off Okinawa and his support from locals was fading, after Hatoyama quit his coalition, Naoto Kan said he would agree to relocate the US base.
