The Geography and Geology of Japan

Japan is located in East Asia; a series of integrated islands (Archipelago) surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. It is situated east of Russia, China and the Koreas.

Because of its location, Japan unfortunately receives more than it’s fair-share of natural disasters. Typhoons occur regularly throughout August and September and because it sits on the boundaries of at least 4 tectonic plates (Eurasian Plate, Philippine Sea Plate, Pacific Plate, and North American Plate), it is prone to earthquakes; which in addition cause tsunamis. Introduction to Japan

Japan, “the land of the rising sun” is located in East Asia and covers an area of 377,835 sq. km. Today Japan is one of the world leaders in industry and future technologies. It is the third largest economy in the world after the United States and China.

The climate in Japan differs from North to South, East to West.  The 4 seasons are distinct, with the famous cherry blossoms blooming in March-April, signalling the start of springtime. While the temperature in July can be a blistering 40°C, the mountains which face the Sea of Japan see heavy snowfall in winter. Tropical airflows from the Pacific Ocean commonly cause typhoons in July and August where during this time, humidity is high.
